"The Fish" is a time-lapse film about a woman who has been running a small-scale fishing company in northern Sweden for over twenty years. Day by day, her trips out to sea yield increasingly smaller catches, until she eventually realizes there are no fish left in the waters. Yet, with unwavering determination, she continues to set out from her harbor each morning, staying attuned to the changes unfolding in the Gulf of Bothnia. One day, when she happens to see a fish, she decides to follow it and transform into a sea being. The film’s narrative is inspired by the real experiences of Swedish fisherwoman Manjula Gulliksson and her husband, Stefan Nordin. Manjula and Stefan have observed changes in marine life caused by industrial fishing and have been regularly writing to authorities to raise the alarm. In the film, reality blends with haunting dreams born of their deep concern for the sea’s condition.
