This film tells the story of my former school — School No. 40 — named after my childhood best friend, Maxim Serafimov, who was later awarded the title Hero of Russia. It explores how the ideals of war patriotism and the education system in Russia in 2022 contributed to the deformation of human values.
Using archival video footage from 2002 — the year I entered first grade together with Maxim — the film weaves a personal chronicle with history. Its dramatic core centers on February 27, 2022, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, when Russian forces attempted to seize the city and Maxim was deployed there as part of a special forces unit.
This is a deeply personal story about my life and my former friend Maxim Serafimov, unfolding against the moment when our country officially announced the so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine.
