Vaiva Bauze: This festival is a weapon against silence

Documentary cinema has always been more than just an art form—it serves as a historical record, a tool for social responsibility, and a voice of democracy. In today’s world, where disinformation and propaganda are once again on the rise, truth-based cinema carries special significance. Viewers’ interest in documentary films continues to grow, as they offer an unfiltered and unembellished reflection of reality, becoming a crucial starting point for conversations at both regional and global scales.

Our festival deliberately continues to showcase films that document events and enhance public understanding of democracy and its fragility. Democracy cannot exist without the free circulation of information, the ability to ask difficult questions, and the courage to speak about what is being silenced. That is why the festival focuses on regions where democracy is restricted or nonexistent, as authoritarian regimes strive to control public thought and cinema remains one of the last strongholds of free expression.

At this festival, we will not remain silent about the consequences of war, no matter where they occur. War always destroys lives, families, and future opportunities, and its victims are often those who never wanted it in the first place—people who simply wish to live, love, raise children, travel, and find joy. Our mission is to ensure that these stories don’t disappear into oblivion and that these voices are not silenced.

Documentary cinema facilitates discussions of complex issues impartially, and festivals bear the responsibility not only to reflect reality but also to create a platform for discussions that strengthen democratic society. Countries that claim democracy as their core value must support such festivals, as they promote critical thinking, freedom of speech, and public awareness.

This festival is a weapon against silence. Its mission is to reveal the truth—even when it is concealed. Our audience can experience
and understand the world through real-life testimonies so that together we can build a more empathetic, informed, and responsible society.
