The title of this program was borrowed from a Moldovan film. Eighteen filmmakers from Moldova created stories about Ukrainian refugees who found shelter in their country at the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The fates of those forced to leave their homes form a deep shadow—one cast by the destruction, death, and cruelty that war brings into the homes of peaceful people.
In the shadow of war are also those within the aggressor country who refuse to accept these crimes and, as a result, become refugees themselves. But having fled, they often face rejection and accusations for the actions of the country whose passport remains their only one. This, too, is a shadow—one that looms over those in Georgia, as seen in the Swiss film DOM by Artdocfest/Riga 2022 winners Laurent Stoop and Svetlana Rodina, or in Armenia, as depicted in Tanya Bazhenova’s K'NEREK, a film supported by the Artdocfest/Fund.
The German film 'Alex & Galya' tells the story of a lesbian couple—one Russian, one Ukrainian—who both fled: one from political repression in her own country, the other from the bombs of that same country, but in her home in Ukraine.
For the screenings of this program, we have chosen a new venue in Riga—UP Space. These films do not demand red festival carpets but rather a space for thoughtful and meaningful discussion. Every day, we will engage in conversations about these films with their authors, journalists, experts, philosophers, and, of course, our audience.
